The Former President's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
